What Happened?

Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC), founded in 1903, is a nationally recognized, 412-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving eastern Los Angeles and western San Bernardino counties. It offers a comprehensive range of services including specialty centers in oncology, cardiac care, women’s and children’s health, and trauma, alongside an emergency department, neonatal ICU, and robotic surgery capabilities.

Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center engaged a vendor to support the operation of a patient-management tool containing specific patients’ protected health information. This vendor, in turn, subcontracted for the storage of the underlying data. In late November 2023, the vendor became aware of the patient-management tool’s unavailability and collaborated with the subcontractor responsible for data storage to resolve the issue. Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center was notified of the problem over a week later, prompting collaboration with the vendor to assess the situation comprehensively. On February 1, 2024, the vendor provided additional details enabling Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center to confirm that an unauthorized third party had accessed the data from the patient-management tool and encrypted the files in late 2023. Recently, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center has begun notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted.
