What Happened?
Recently, Blueberry Medical announced a data breach that may have compromised protected health information belonging to certain patients. According to the notice provided, Blueberry Medical discovered the incident on August 22, 2026, after a criminal actor exploited a previously unknown security vulnerability in Metabase, a third-party technology provider used by the company for reporting and data analysis. The exploitation resulted in unauthorized access to Blueberry Medical’s Metabase environment and the theft of a copy of certain patient data. Blueberry Medical promptly restricted the unauthorized access, applied a security patch, updated relevant passwords and security protocols, notified law enforcement, and engaged external cybersecurity specialists to investigate the incident.
In a separate but related incident, Photon, a prescription service provider to Blueberry Medical, also experienced unauthorized access involving the same Metabase vulnerability. Blueberry Medical was notified of the Photon incident on August 24, 2026. After receiving a suspicious email on August 19, 2026, Photon identified the vulnerability and applied a patch on August 21, 2026. Photon determined that patient data had been obtained during a period of unauthorized access between August 9, 2026, and August 12, 2026. Because the two incidents involved overlapping information, affected individuals may receive multiple notifications relating to the same underlying vulnerability.
The types of information potentially exposed in the Blueberry Medical incident may include names, health plan names and policy numbers, dates of birth, and medical information, including medical records, dates of service, medical codes, and charges for services. Information potentially involved in the Photon incident may include names, street addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, member IDs, and medication information. Blueberry Medical stated that clinical photos and medically necessary videos used to assist clinicians with diagnoses were stored separately and were not compromised. Social Security numbers and payment information were not involved.
Notifications have been sent to affected individuals with additional details regarding the incident and the specific categories of information that may have been involved.
